I have 16GB in my Late 2011 15" Macbook Pro. Suggest MacSales.com or Curcial.com as they are well respected Mac RAM vendors.
I also replaced the disk with an SSD. That gave it a real boost in performance. At the time I did this, I was running Mavericks. I'm running El Capitan at the moment, and performance is still really good.
